Hollow and light, so she can breathe with it in her mouth at a run.
A 3-inch ball with a hollow, mesh-like shell. The openings aren't decoration — they let air through while your dog is running with the ball in her mouth, which matters for a dog who fetches until she's flat out. It's also lighter than a solid ball, so it carries further off a launcher, and the openings take treats if you want to slow the game down.
It floats, so it's as good at the dam as it is on the lawn.
Materials: rubber. Chuckit! describe it as "safe for dog's mouth" — note they don't make a teeth-and-gums claim for this one, that belongs to the Ultra Squeaker.
Launcher fit: Large is 3 inches, which needs an L-size Chuckit! launcher. It will not fit the Classic 26M, which takes 2.5-inch medium balls.
Chuckit! ask you to supervise play until you're sure your dog won't destroy the toy, and to replace any ball that develops rips, tears or cuts. Size matters more than anything else here: the ball should not fit completely inside her mouth. If it does, size up. These are fetch toys, not chew toys — Chuckit! publish no chew-strength rating for any of them. A dog who settles down to gnaw a ball rather than chase it should have a proper chew instead. To clean, hand wash in warm water with a soft brush and mild dish soap, then air dry fully. Petmate's own guidance is to avoid long soaks — they degrade rubber. The hollow shell holds water. Shake it out and let it dry properly, or it will grow mildew inside where you can't see it.
