The protein here is black soldier fly larvae alongside lamb — an insect protein, which sounds novelty until you consider that a dog who has eaten chicken, beef and lamb for eight years has had every chance to become sensitised to them and none at all to react to an insect.

Behind the novel protein, this is built for skin: omega-3 at 1.25% with EPA/DHA at 0.5%, zinc at 220 mg/kg, organic selenium at 1.1 mg/kg, plus quercetin, spirulina and bromelain. Fat runs at 15% and energy at 400 kcal per 100 g, the densest in the Karoo dog range. Montego say six weeks to see a difference; that's about one skin cycle, which is honest.

Looking after it

Store in a cool, dry place, sealed. Use within six weeks of opening. This supports healthy skin; it doesn't treat fleas, mites or an actual allergy. A dog scratching hard enough to break skin, or losing hair in patches, needs a vet first and a food second — and keep her flea treatment current whatever else you do, because flea allergy is still the commonest skin disease in dogs.
