A large litter is a lot of milk. This carries her through it.
A large-breed bitch nursing eight or nine puppies is running an energy deficit most owners underestimate. Her requirement can reach three times maintenance at peak lactation, and if the food isn't concentrated enough she simply takes the difference out of her own body — you see it in the ribs and the coat by week four.
Fat at 22% and protein at 30% make this dense enough to keep up. The same kibble rehydrates for the puppies, so weaning runs on one product: betaglucans and prebiotics support guts meeting solid food, and psyllium keeps things moving through a stage where digestive upsets spread through a litter fast. Feed from mating through to the puppies leaving at eight weeks.
Rice, dehydrated poultry protein, animal fats, vegetable protein isolate (L.I.P. — protein selected for its very high digestibility), hydrolysed animal proteins, maize, beet pulp, minerals, soya oil, vegetable fibres, fish oil, fructo-oligo-saccharides, psyllium husks and seeds, hydrolysed yeast (source of manno-oligo-saccharides), fatty acid salt, yeast extracts (source of betaglucans), marigold extract (source of lutein). Additives (per kg) — Nutritional additives: Vitamin A 19,000 IU · Vitamin D3 1,200 IU · E1 (Iron) 42 mg · E2 (Iodine) 4.2 mg · E4 (Copper) 13 mg · E5 (Manganese) 55 mg · E6 (Zinc) 134 mg · E8 (Selenium) 0.07 mg. Technological additives: Clinoptilolite of sedimentary origin 10 g. Preservatives. Antioxidants.
Store in a cool, dry place, sealed. Use within six weeks of opening; decant a 15 kg bag into an airtight bin. Start the puppies on soaked kibble around three weeks and reduce the water over a fortnight. Use several wide trays rather than one — a large litter at one bowl means the smallest gets nothing. Weigh every puppy daily for the first fortnight.
