Soft food for an old mouth, with phosphorus kept down.
Wet food comes into its own with a very old small dog, and usually for a blunt reason: her teeth hurt, or there aren't many left. A soft pouch is something she can eat without effort, and the smell gets her interested when a declining sense of smell has taken the appetite with it.
Phosphorus is held to 0.16% to spare ageing kidneys, which is the main nutritional lever anyone has on chronic kidney disease, and EPA and DHA at 0.12% support joints and cognition. At 80% moisture it also raises her water intake substantially — genuinely useful in a dog whose kidneys are working harder than they were.
Meat and animal derivatives, cereals, vegetable protein extracts, oils and fats, derivatives of vegetable origin, minerals, yeasts, vegetables, various sugars. Refrigerate any opened pouch and use within 24 hours. Warm it slightly — an old dog's sense of smell fades and warmth brings the aroma up. Get her mouth checked; a dog eating only wet food because chewing hurts needs dental treatment, not just softer food. Watch her water intake and mention any increase to your vet.
